A Question for the Hive-mind

Hopefully this isn’t the first time you’ve been to this site, but this question is for anyone who reads it, even if it’s your first time here.

I’m thinking of moving my content (I like that word…makes me sound like an actual adult instead of the ancient 12-year-old that I am in reality) from a blog to a YouTube channel. (Yes, Lily…it’s all because of you.) That said, what’s your opinion about making that switch?

There are no wrong answers, just the rude ones that I don’t allow to be posted (there haven’t been many of them over the years, but there have been a few). I appreciate your input and responses. T’anks!

Youtube? I hear that once you get 1000 followers, you can put some serious change in your pocket. If you’re up for the challenges (editing video is not in my bailiwick), I say go for it.

Thanks, Don! At my (low) level, I have no trouble editing. Color correction? With MY horrible color vision (if what I see is “color vision”), the only thing I’ll adjust is saturation. Feedback is appreciated!

Sure! I think a live stream format might be more fitting to your content, though. You can ramble and chit-chat like nobody else and solves the issue of having learn video editing (unless that’s a thing you’re looking to do…).

There are things I can do with editing (as long as color isn’t the topic…my color vision is abysmal…such as saturation). Live-streaming doesn’t go in the direction I want. What I want to do is to encourage people to step up and try things that make them nervous. Since my return to the hobby in ‘14, I haven’t started a build that I know how to finish. Since I haven’t found a School for Modeling, we have to teach ourselves. And as you know, few things teach as well as bitching something up, figuring out what went sideways (often that’s not at all difficult), and then fixing it. I think that showing what I’ve done isn’t as useful as showing how I do it…hence, videos.

      Thanks for the feedback!

    Hi Wayne,

I think you should do the YouTube thing.

There’s my input and I hope all is well with you.

Jeez you’re wordy… Now that the requisite chop-busting is out of the way, I have always been impressed by your insight and intellect. I don’t know what your reasoning is, and due to my respect for your cognizance, I’m going to consider the result.

I’m doing okay. I miss bantering with you! Thanks for your response.

Well, what can I say? My mindset is reading-oriented and I’m not a fan of videos and the like… When I’m seated on my modeling bench I keep my tablet and books by my side ready to look for references and tricks I can learn from people like you (and I can say I have seen a couple of useful techniques in your posts). But staying with my nose stuck to a Youtube video for many minutes just doesn’t appeal me, unless it can shed some light on some dark magic technique too hard to work out only on a written description. Anyway, I think you will take the best decision for your working routine.
    Best regards and happy modeling.

What can you say? Dewd…I think you answered that question very well! As a modeler you know that for all of our community (which is one of the things I really like…it IS a community!), our hobby is a solitary activity. Just your comment that this website *is* of use to you fulfills my intent for the website. If I had a heart, that would warm it. What’s driven me to even consider a YouTube channel at all was several people saying that they liked what I did, they wondered *how* I did it and what tools I used. Well…trying to put that in words is kinda like trying to explain what an orgasm feels like. Somehow saying “good” doesn’t convey it. I’ve certainly gotten some REALLY useful techniques by watching someone do it (yeah…that also covers orgasms…but am I over sharing?). Another question I’ve received is about how to make molds and cast resin. Nah…words don’t do it there, either (and posting a video eats up TONS of space in the limited cache the website hosts). So THANK you for your feedback! Maybe I’ll end up doing both the website AND a YouTube channel!

      Thanks again!

YouTube is another creative outlet for you to experiment with. Your blogging background will help you for sure. Making interesting videos is as much art as science and the only way to find your voice is to get started and see what works for you. Looking forward to seeing them!

Yeah, the blog started with a mailing list when my friends (both of them) asked me what I was doing. So I started the blog. The past couple of years I’ve been getting questions from my friends (three, now that Bubbles has gotten paroled) have become *how* I do it. Words only go so far. (That’s what The Bird is for, usually.) As you know, sometimes y’gotta show ‘em…well, for when they’re sober enough to focus their eyes.

      Thanks for the response!
